Cannabis and Addiction

So you have heard of the medical uses of Cannabis to different illnesses. And now you are planning to try it on your ailment. Before you decide to jump on the first Cannabiss sold to you, get to know first what Cannabis really is, why was it banned in some states of America, and how you could benefit from it.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is derived from either Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica, which are all a form of Indian hemp plants. Marijuana is the term frequently use to refer Cannabis. Other term includes hash, grass, pot, weed, reefer, dope, herb, mull, buddha, ganja, joint, stick, buckets, cones, skunk, hydro, yarndi, and hooch. Cannabis belongs to the depressant drugs which means it slows down your central nervous system and the transfer of messaging from your body to your brain.

Active ingredient of Cannabis are as follows:

#1 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

This is the major psychoactive component that makes up to 30% of Cannabis and the one that causes you the “high”. THC doesn’t really occur in its active form and is only a part of the THCA (THC acid). However, THCA will be converted into THC when burned or heated.

#2 Cannabidiol (CBD)

CBD is another popular component of Cannabis which is mainly found in hemp. CBD have almost zero psychoactive effects and works as the opposite of THC.

#3 Cannabinol (CBN)

Cannabinol or CBN is actually the byproduct of THC after it is heated or exposed to oxygen. CBN contains a sedating effect, though not as strong as in THC.

#4 Terpenoids

Terpenoids is another component which is responsible for the unique aroma and flavor found in Cannabis.

Is Cannabis addictive?

Based on the active ingredients found in Cannabis, the answer is YES. But, still the addictiveness level of the plant depends on how you use it. Heating or burning Cannabis will naturally convert Tetrahydrocannabino acid (THCA) into THC which causes the “high” or the toxicity. THC activates the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), THC affects the brain in such a way that it makes the person elated, ecstatic, and even numbness from pain.

High level of THC may cause addiction, impaired motor skills, and can even trigger symptoms of Schizophrenia and paranoia. However, studies have indicated that while THC gives you the “high”, it may be also responsible for the therapeutic effects of Cannabis.

On the other hand, CBD is the total opposite of THC in terms of toxicity. It doesn’t cause addiction and doesn’t react to cannabinoid receptors in the brain. However, it has one very important function; it works in concert with THC which means it boosts the therapeutic effects of THC while controlling its psychoactive effects. Not only in THC, CBD can also lessen the addictive effects of other drugs such as opioids and even alcohol.

How Marijuana Increase Testosterone Level

Testosterone is a hormone found both in men and women. However, they are much higher levels in men. Its production increases during puberty and starts to lower down after 30. Testosterone is responsible for several bodily functions in men – most especially for having high libidos or increase sex drives. The higher your testosterone level, the more active you are. Due to this, some men are looking for ways to boost their testosterone level. Fortunately, the use of marijuana is linked to having increase testosterone levels.

Contrary to what some studies that claimed the use of marijuana is directly linked to the decrease of testicular size; it is believed that men who had ever smoked marijuana had significantly higher testosterone levels. Aside, studies conducted before that shows men using Cannabis has resulted to a significant decrease of their testosterone level were also found out that the participants had history with substance abuse.

Moreover, Cannabinoids and testosterone studies were conducted by a group of medical experts in 2014 have shown that low levels of medical marijuana use will benefit sperm production and testosterone level in men; because of the positive effects it brought to Endocannabinoid system, the body system that plays a very important role in cell and hormone production.

So, does CBD lower testosterone in male? The answer to this question really depends on the person’s Cannabis consumption rate. Pots effect on testosterone is positive if the person uses Cannabis moderately. Compared to men who had never smoked marijuana, men who smoke marijuana at least once in their life actually has higher sperm concentration. However, the amount of marijuana intake should not be as frequent as you would want it to be. Or else, the component THC will intoxicate you and may harm your health. A boost on men’s sperm cell production and higher testosterone level can be associated with the use of a little bit of marijuana occasionally.

This goes to show that whatever thing that you consume in excess is always bad for your health. Well, if you are not in a hurry to have any kids, then you might not need to worry about consuming more marijuana. However, it is recommended that you give yourself some time off when using marijuana – just to be sure that your testicle size will not shrink, lower down your testosterone levels or worse, affect your sperm count. Use marijuana moderately and enjoy it without risking your health, or your future generation. The way you consume Cannabis also determines the amount of effect it causes you. Eating edible Cannabis or using its CBD oil is a better and healthier option compared to actually smoking it. The high effect caused by Cannabis happens slower when eating edibles than the latter.

Cannabinoids and the Immune System: An Overview

When you get sick, you automatically treat yourself by seeking medication. Did you know that a human body is designed to defend itself? Your immune system protects your body from harmful substance. The immune response is how your body defends itself by fighting bacteria and other foreign substances that appear to be harmful. The immune system responds by recognizing antigens. Antigens are substances on the surface of cells, viruses or bacteria. Antigens can also be nonliving substances such as toxins, drugs and chemicals. Your immune system will recognize antigens and will destroy it.

Typically, your body is designed to cure and treat itself through its system called as immune responses. Generally, an immune response is divided in to two types – innate immunity and passive immunity.

Innate immunity

Innate or nonspecific immunity is the defense system of your body with which you were born. It gives you protection against all antigens. This type of immunity involves barriers that prevent harmful materials and substances from entering your body. This barrier serves as your body’s first line of defense. Example of innate immunity includes:

  • Stomach acid
  • Skin
  • Mucus
  • Cough reflex

Passive immunity

Passive immunity is when your body gets an antibodies that is not its own. For example, an infant has a passive immunity because they are born with antibodies from their mother. It provides direct protection against an antigen but it will not last long. These antibodies disappear when an infant turns 6 months and older. When a baby produces its own antibodies, they no longer have a passive immunity.

Does CBD Help Immune System

Cannabidiols or CBD oil is a product extracted from medical marijuana or Cannabis. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another psychoactive component of Cannabis, CBD does not give anyone the “high”. In fact, it is believed to opposes the side effects of THC. And at the same time, it enhances its therapeutic effects. Meaning, when THC and CBD oil is taken, the person will not get addicted to Cannabis but will get the medicinal plant’s many health benefits.

Now, the million-dollar question is, does CBD oil kill viruses? The medical marijuana may not really cure your common colds and cough, however, with the antioxidant properties present in Cannabis, it greatly helps in managing the symptoms of illnesses and may provide fast relief. Continuous researches are being conducted to prove if taking Cannabinoids white blood cell count will also increase. If proven positive, it would be a big milestone in the medical industry since many places in United States are already slowly accepting the use of medical marijuana. Those people living in the 29 states were marijuana is already legal, in state level, can now grow their own Cannabis for their personal use.

The good thing about growing your own Cannabis and process it to make your own CBD oil is that you can save a lot compared to buying it in the black market. You just have to buy a decent Cannabis processing equipment and learn how to process your own CBD oil, and you’re good to go.

  5. Prolonged intake of medications

Osteoporosis is a condition that happens gradually. Some may not be able to notice outward symptoms. If you have osteoporosis, you will likely to experience the following signs:

A CBD and bone growth research were conducted in Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom headed by Prof. Stuart Ralston which analyzes the data of 284 adults. 170 of these participants uses recreational marijuana regularly while the rest are cigarette smokers and have not experienced using marijuana at all.
