Cannabinoids and Pregnancy
It is almost a taboo for us to talk about women using marijuana while on pregnancy. However, history would tell us that ancient people had used marijuana as a medicinal plan in treating several diseases including inflammation, wound infections, pain relief, and many others. With 29 states in the US that legalized, in the state level, the use and growing of medical marijuana, many researches are again being conducted about this controversial plant. Cannabinoids and pregnancy has been one of the favorite subjects in today’s scientific research.
In fact, Dreher’s Jamaican Pregnancy Study is a very famous study conducted on medical marijuana and pregnant women. Pregnant women in Jamaica are known to use Cannabis on a regular basis to relieve nausea brought by their pregnancy. Dr. Melanie Dreher, was then a medical grad student when she conducted her ethnographic study of Cannabinoids and pregnancy. She observed and documented forty-four pregnant women; 24 of which were using marijuana and 20 of which does not use marijuana. Dr. Dreher along with other researchers have observed the women until the babies had turned 5 years old. Their research results showed no undesirable effects of the mother’s use of Cannabis on the children. Some of these children even seemed to excel in some ways.
