Cannabis vs. Marinol

Lots of people are confused between the difference of cannabis and marinol. In fact, some people are interchangeably using these two terms. It might be because they have almost the same use. But if you are going to go deeper, you’ll find out the difference and you’ll able to choose which is better and which is best for your certain needs.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis or marijuana is a group of plants called Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis; these plants are known for psychoactive properties. In fact, it is considered as the most commonly used illicit drugs globally.

Cannabis is used by drying the harvested flowers of the plant. Some processes its extract to make CBD oil, a very famous product of Cannabis for its relaxing and calming effects without making you high or toxic. Though, growing and using it is still considered by some countries as illegal, there are also many places that are becoming more accepting towards it. In fact, 29 states of the United States have legalized, in state level, the use of Cannabis. There are about 120 components of Cannabis but the 2 most active components are Cannabinoids (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

What is Marinol?

Marinol is a synthetic form of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that has been used medically since 1980s to relieve symptoms of illnesses. Since it is an FDA-approved, it is widely used by many to provide relief from nausea and vomiting as side effects of chemotherapy treatments.

Marinol Vs Cannabis

Both are products from Cannabis plants and both provides relief to individuals having different illnesses. So, what is the difference between the two.

Cannabis is much better compared to Marinol since patients can control the dosing. Even the smaller 5mg of Marinol is too much for a patient to handle all at once. Taking cannabis on larger dosage can still be manageable for patients. So, if you think of much safer medicine for your illness, it would be much better to venture on cannabis rather than on Marinol.
Marinol often upset stomach. To some patients, it can cause nausea and patients would definitely feel sicker and not better after taking it into their system.
The Marinol does not contain other cannabinoids. It only contains synthetic THC. Stripping medicine any of these cannabinoids completely defeats the purpose of the medicine.
Medical marijuana is composed of much better medicine. Hence, it includes all the cannabinoids useful for the treatment of the illness of the patient. More so, Marinol does not contain any flavonoids which are believed to help the drug work better too.
Marinol has more side effects than cannabis. Many patients would say that they cannot tolerate some of its side effects.

Another disadvantage of Marinol is the price. Since it is already synthetic and processed, it is more expensive compared to Cannabis. Another thing, if you live in states where Cannabis is legal, you can opt to grow your own Cannabis and even process your own CBD oil. This is way cheaper compared to buying the same products in the market. You can also be guaranteed that you will be using pure Cannabis that are free from contaminants.
