Delirium marked by memory impairment and disorientation has been observed in a few rare cases. These reports invariably originate in countries such as India where high-potency cannabis extracts are taken orally. Eating large quantities of high-potency marijuana, using concentrated cannabis called hashish, or taking multiple doses of synthetic delta-9 THC in tablet form is usually found to induce sedation and sleep. Delirium is uncommon, yet may appear in children and older people who are physiologically more susceptible to psychotropic drugs. Despite the few reported cases, there is no biochemical model for delirium caused by ingesting exceptionally large quantities of cannabinoid compounds. Reportedly, subjects suffering from cannabis-induced delirium are easily calmed by clear and rational discussion. All psychological and physiological effects of cannabis wear off within several hours following consumption.
